721 Feedback: Re-discovering our Learning Spirits as Awareness Seekers and Practitioners (CS
Thursday – Saturday, 25-27 Sept. 2008
Jean-Claude Audergon & Arlene Audergon—London
We will focus on Mindell’s concept of ‘feedback’ (from sentient, dreaming and consensus reality awareness) differentiating between feedback, evaluation, and criticism – away from power and isolation into new patterns of feedback and reflection.
For students, qualified practitioners and others interested in Process Work methods for perceiving and following feedback, and for evaluation in the fields of therapy, education, coaching, and organisational development.
Cost: £260. (£220 if £100 deposit received by June 1.) Please enquire about bursaries.

We are thinking about feedback in at least two ways.
1. First, feedback as a Process Work concept, which is such an extraordinary and sophisticated concept and tool for understanding the complexity of systems, and unfolding processes, with profound applications in such areas as psychotherapy, body and symptom work, mental health, working with altered states of illness and coma, special education, working with disabilities, coaching, community development, organisational development, conflict resolution, the arts, the environment and more
2. Second, we will also look at feedback in relation to the process of giving and receiving feedback in one’s studies and teaching of Process Work; one’s practice and supervision of Process Work; in relation to one’s contact with the wider learning community of Process Work; in one’s contact with the communities in which you work; and in the professional fields in which one works, such as Psychotherapy, Conflict Resolution, Mediation, Complementary Medicine, Law, Organisational and Community Development, Arts, and more
*The idea for Feedback 721 *
The idea for this seminar came up a couple years ago. Within the various organisations and fields where we work, including the schools and organisations of Process Work with which we are associated, we feel a vital interest in the importance of curiosity and learning. We notice how easy it is to forget sometimes that the process leads the way, or to confuse – ‘doing the right thing’ with learning from the process which interventions will best enable it to unfold. We got interested in Arny Minell’s description /formulation of 721 degrees of Feedback ..
As far as we’ve learned until now, our sense of what is involved in studying, becoming and continuing to develop as a practitioner of Process Work – and we are aware this is also applicable to practitioners in all kinds of fields – is the devotion and unstoppable curiosity and dedication to learn from every situation one encounters.
At the heart of Process Oriented Psychology is an experience and a pleasure in discovering the seeds of transformation within the very difficulties we meet. This approach is seated in a paradigm of awareness, which means that we are not trying to change things – but to notice change as its happening, and bring awareness along.
Process Work is a paradigm or orientation focusing on awareness, rather than power. This leads to discovering the inherent creativity of process that arises out of a real interaction with awareness among all parts and points of view. A power paradigm is more focused on one part dominating or winning over another. Awareness includes awareness of the reality of power dynamics – looking at our identifications, and accountability around power, as well as complex rank dynamics in relationship and community.
This awareness paradigm means interacting with all forms of feedback. It includes working with a complex set of feedback internally, the feedback from others, and one’s deepest sentient sense of direction. Arny Mindell calls this 721 feedback. ( 360 degrees internally; 360 degrees externally plus one sentient unifying sense of direction. )
This notion of 721 feedback is applicable in many ways. One essential way, is that when you feel challenged by a situation, that you learn how you can take on 100% of the difficulty as an inner dynamic or inner conflict – and transform yourself – even if, and especially if, the whole problem appears to be or is situated outside of you. This is the ‘rainmaker story’ in Taoism. The rainmaker arrives in a region where there is terrible drought. He asks for a tent, goes inside, and comes out after three days, as the rain starts pounding down. When asked how he had made it rain, he said, ‘I did not “make” it rain. I saw the community was not in order, so I needed to put myself in touch with the Tao’. This learning principle is at the basis of a Process Work approach, and at the basis of a Process Work training and practice. There is a systemic / micro-macrocosm relationship, not a linear or mono-causal relationship, between different levels or subsystems, which allows awareness at one level to influence the whole system. It also involves recognising that a process appears systemically at different levels simultaneously – internally, in relationship, in community, in the world. It involves a rich and complex process of unfolding feedback, that is happening simultaneously ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. This necessarily includes a fluid awareness of rank dynamics and understanding of oppression and accountability, to recognize that doing inner work is not about adapting or repeating the oppression internally, but it is about processing the dynamics in a way that transforms oneself and the world through inner work. And that relationship and community work are also needed.
This three day 721 Feedback seminar is particularly oriented to people who are very involved in learning Process Work in the UK and Europe. It will include students, diplomate practitioners and others attempting to apply Process Work in a wide range of fields. We look forward to also explore the contact and feedback among us as a learning community and to be able to share some of the range of research, projects and work going on in various fields. Please email Arlene and JC, or Stanya if you want to find out if this seminar is right for you.
Some of the things we are going to be doing:
Study ‘Feedback’ from sentient, dreaming and consensus reality awareness, within various contexts from psychotherapy, to bodywork, to conflict facilitation, mediation, teams and organisational development .
Use a ‘Case Study’ format for people to present research in progress, explore theory, and practice as facilitators, and differentiate and include different levels of 721 feedback. (If you’d like to present a case , that we can all learn with, let us know)
Discover easier methods to give and receive feedback – to differentiate feedback, evaluation, and criticism, and to seek and give feedback in a training or project context.
Coaching methods, for oneself and others – Recognise areas where you ( or others) need coaching, to build new patterns at an edge, and finding these.
Study in oneself and in communities the shifting paradigm or patterns around isolation and power, and emerging patterns of supporting complex feedback, reflection and relationship within different fields and within society.
